Middle school students spent a day filled with school spirit, friendly competition, and plenty of energy during this year’s Middle School Field Day on Friday, September 25th. Centered around this year’s middle school theme, “A Champion Shines,” the day reminded students that being a champion is about more than competition. It’s about letting the light of Christ shine through the way we live, serve, encourage, and work together.
The day began in the gym with worship and a devotional led by Mrs. Saenz. During worship the students created a lively atmosphere responding to the songs. During a slower song, the students brought out their flashlights and shined them back and forth to the rhythm of the song. It was a beautiful scene, and a picture of how each student shines their light for Christ!
After worship, Mrs. Saenz gave a short devotion. She did an illustration where two students each held a basketball. From the outside the two balls looked the same, however when they bounced the balls, one was flat. Mrs. Saenz explained that the air inside each ball represents the Holy Spirit and that it isn’t until a challenging situation arises where it shows if we have the Holy Spirit living inside us or not. This was a great visual to show that we need to have the Holy Spirit in our lives to help us fulfil our purpose.
After the devotion and a time of reflection, the gym lights went off and the competition began!
Students participated in a variety of glow-themed games and activities designed to encourage teamwork, creativity, communication, and friendly competition. From glowing hula hoop games to glow-in-the-dark Volleyball and Capture the Flag, each color team had opportunities to work together and cheer one another on.
The glow theme brought an extra element of excitement to the day as students wore colorful glowsticks and competed in a blacked-out gym with neon lights. Whether they were working together to pass a ball into a hula hoop, battling it out on the volleyball court, or racing across the gym to capture a glowing orb, students brought plenty of enthusiasm to each event.
To finish out the day of competition the students played tug of war. Each homeroom went up against each other until finally it was 7B as a winner for the girls and 8A as a winner for the boys. In one final competition the 7th grade girls went up against the 8th grade boys. The girls showed their strength, resolve, and determination and actually beat the boys and were declared the middle school tug of war champions!
As the day came to a close, students went outside to the recess field for the final Color Wars celebration. The top three teams were able to leave the gym first and given extra color packets for one final celebration. Once all of the students were on the field, on the signal, students opened their packets and filled the air with bursts of color, bringing Field Day to an energetic and memorable conclusion.
For all of our 6th graders, this was their first time participating in field day. Zion and Niyi, two boys who are new to middle school this year, agreed that Color Wars was their favorite part of the whole day!
Overall, Field Day was about more than fun and winning. It was a day where students learned to encourage their teammates, demonstrate sportsmanship, solve problems together, and make memories with their classmates and teachers. It was a day to give our students another opportunity to grow together as they learn what it means to be champions who shine for Christ!
