Meet our new high school math teacher Tiffany Thompson. While this is Mrs. Thompson’s first year at TCS, she comes with a wealth of experience having taught math in public schools for seventeen years. She loves learning and has completed several degrees. She received her bachelor’s degree in computer science with a minor in mathematics from Spelman College. She has a master’s degree in mathematics education 7-12 and a Master of Education from Fordham University in Administration & Supervision. She is currently in a doctorate program at Temple University for Educational Leadership and set to graduate in 2025. This year Mrs. Thompson is teaching Algebra I, College Mathematics, and Cyber Literacy. Let’s hear from Mrs. Thompson about why she is excited to work at Timothy!

What/Who inspired you to take up teaching?

From a very young age, I knew I wanted to be a teacher. All of my teachers inspired me. I had some really amazing teachers and college professors throughout my education journey. It also helped having a grandfather that was the head custodian at one of the local schools in my hometown. I had full access to the school and on the weekends I enjoyed helping my grandfather out and writing on the chalkboards in each of the classrooms.

Why did you choose to teach at TCS?

God led me to teach at TCS. I had been commuting back and forth to New York City for many years and taught math in some of the city’s toughest schools. I enjoyed being on the frontlines, but God was calling me in a different direction. I knew I had completed my assignment in New York City and was excited about the opportunity at TCS and to be able to teach math from a biblical perspective.

What do you love most about TCS?

I love being part of a community that shares the same Christian values as I do. It is an amazing experience to be able to pray with your coworkers and students, and fellowship with other believers.

What is one word that best describes the school? Why?

FAMILY. I immediately felt welcomed and embraced by my new TCS Family. The love of God radiates from everyone at TCS.

How are faith and learning integrated at TCS?

Students have Chapel once a week and meet in small groups to discuss God’s word. This year, students are reading The Prodigal God by Timothy Keller and our theme verse for the year is Philippians 3:10, “I want to know Christ…” In addition, content lessons are taught from a biblical perspective. For example, in math we talk about the importance of numbers and how God loves order. We see the significance of order especially when it comes to operating on numbers and other complex ideas.

In what ways are you preparing students for life beyond TCS?

I like to challenge my students to think outside of the box and encourage them to think critically in a rapidly changing world. I remind them that nothing is too hard for God, and that they can do all things through Christ who strengthens them.

What would you tell families to encourage them to send their children to TCS?

TCS is a wonderful school experience. There is a positive school culture. The student population is diverse, academically competitive, and well-rounded. Students form healthy connections with each other and are involved in extra-curricular activities.

Anything else you would like to share about your experience at TCS thus far?

My experience has been wonderful thus far. After teaching in New York City Public Schools, for many years, it is rewarding to teach at a school that is Christ centered. I think I have found my forever home!
