Here’s a
math quiz: What do you get when you take students from Timothy Christian School and add them to the ACSI (Association for Christian Schools International) Math Olympics? Answer: Sixteen students coming home as award winners!
So we may not be great with the math jokes, but our students were outstanding at this year’s competition.
“We did amazingly well and one thing that was so exciting for me was that we had so many students participating,” says Jayne Babij TCS Elementary Principal. “I was so proud of them all.”
This year 36 TCS students from 3rd-8th grade took part in the competition. The competition which includes six other private Christian schools from New Jersey and Pennsylvania, tests students on math skills in two categories: Reasoning and Computation.
The more than a dozen winners include two first place champions; fifth grader, Roland D. who won the computation category and 6th grader, James T. who won a medal for math reasoning and scoring above 85% on the test- a task which is no small fete. Second place winners include; 5th grader Liam S. and 7th grader Evan Wang who both achieved awards for reasoning.
This year’s event was also a family affair as five sets of siblings participated in the competition.
“Parents that attended were able to see their children that are in elementary school and middle school both attend,” says TCS 5th Grade Teacher, Amy Delmanto. “It was really exciting for some of our kids to be able t
o cheer on their older or younger siblings.”
The experience is somewhat unique to Timothy. In public school, siblings would attend different schools for elementary, middle and high school. With TCS being K-12, brothers and sisters were able to support each other during the competition.
