Spend a lot of time around high school athletics and you’ll notice the term ‘sportsmanship award’ comes with a stigma. It is common for such an award to be given to the team or athletic department that had a tough year and ‘kept their chins up’. The sportsmanship award, many times, becomes viewed as the losers award. The award given to the really nice kids…..that lost a lot.
TCS’ athletics department broke that mold this season when it was awarded the GMC divisional sportsmanship award for the 2013-14 school year at the GMC Sportsmanship Luncheon. Must’ve had a bad year in the win/loss column, right? Not exactly. TCS’ Athletics Department earned 4 divisional titles, 3 coach of the year awards, 2 all-county athletes, 2 top-10 post-season rankings, and over a dozen all-division athletes. Not to mention that Coach Bills won his 1000th varsity game and was inducted into the NJSIAA Coaches Hall of Fame. All of that winning represented TCS as a first-class school. The divisional sportsmanship award proved it can be done with Christ-like character.
