Timothy Christian School recently welcomed its fifth-grade students and families for Middle School Experience Night, an exciting evening designed to give students a hands-on glimpse into what life in middle school will be like. The event allowed fifth graders to meet future teachers, hear from the MS Principal and Dean of Students, and participate in engaging activities that reflect the middle school learning experience.
Throughout the evening, students rotated through a variety of interactive sessions led by middle school teachers. Each unique activity highlighted the subject area while encouraging curiosity, collaboration, and critical thinking.
To kick off the night, Mrs. Janho, seventh and eighth grade science teacher, guided students as they examined yogurt cultures under a microscope. This activity gave students an up-close look at how science labs function in middle school and sparked excitement about future experiments.
Social studies teachers Miss Edwards and Miss Ferreri challenged students to decipher hieroglyphics. Working together, students decoded symbols to spell out the phrase “Social Studies is fun,” introducing them to historical problem solving and teamwork.
Representing the Middle School English Department, Mrs. Dinicola and Mr. Van Ness led a lively “Would You Rather” activity. Students chose sides in response to different questions and explained their reasoning, encouraging thoughtful discussion and confidence in expressing ideas.
Math teachers Mrs. George and Mrs. Leahy engaged students in a sorting activity where letters were organized to spell the word “decimals.” This hands-on approach helped students think about some of the math vocabulary explored in middle school.
One of the highlights of the evening took place during the session led by Mr. Carr, computer science teacher and robotics club advisor. Fifth graders had the opportunity to drive the robots built by the middle school and high school robotics teams. They created two teams who raced to complete their challenges, one driving to a barrier and back and the other driving to a box and shooting the ball inside. Cheers filled the room as the robot successfully shot balls into the box!
For the Bible activity, Mr. Covington challenged the students to put pictures from the life of Moses in the correct order. This activity connected their biblical knowledge with sequencing and discussion.
The evening concluded with presentations from Mrs. Dyer, Director of Advancement, Mr. Rodriguez, Dean of Students, and Miss McKay, Middle School and High School Principal. They shared important information about the transition from elementary school to middle school, including expectations related to responsibility, communication, and the ROAR behavior matrix.
Our Middle School Experience Night was a wonderful opportunity for fifth graders to feel confident and excited about the next step in their academic journey. We look forward to welcoming these students into middle school and continuing to partner with families during this important transition!
