In 9th grade Introduction to Literature, the students read the narrative essay “The Washwoman” by Isaac Bashevis Singer. To make this story come alive, Mrs. Jayawardene assigns her students the task of interviewing “stalwart” teachers at TCS. We are releasing the third in a series of excerpts from essays that students wrote about Mrs. Leahy, Mr. Carroll, Miss Walker, and Mrs. Delmanto.

Mrs. Delmanto has been teaching at TCS for the past 12 years. She came to the saving knowledge of Christ at five years old in her Sunday School class. She says that God called her to become a teacher even though it wasn’t what she originally wanted to do. At TCS she feels that she has made a lasting impact in preparing 5th graders for middle and high school. She noted that she was initially recruited to be a middle school teacher, but since she started teaching 5th graders, she has never changed. She returned to TCS as a teacher because she received a call from Mrs. McKay regarding the availability of an opening for a middle school teacher. Her favorite subject to teach is mathematics. TCS has impacted her life by giving her the opportunity to send her children here. One of her favorite memories has been going to the museum in New York with the 5th graders. She said she can see herself continuing to work here in the future. Working here has impacted her faith by helping it grow in a positive environment. She has seen a lot of improvement in the school over time such as more classes and sports. She has seen TCS change for the better.

She attended TCS as a student from K-12 and graduated in 1993. Even though she did not want to be a teacher at first and tried to rebel against it, Mrs. Delmanto stated that she is at perfect peace now that she has accepted her calling from the Lord. Mrs. Delmanto makes a difference in many ways but most of all she prepares the 5th graders for Middle School and the rest of their school careers. In conclusion, Mrs. Delmanto is a wonderful teacher and has a positive impact on the rest of the TCS family.
