After completing her B.A. at Long Island University, Mrs. Mulroy, a gifted photographer, had her own photography studio in NYC for 20 years. Later, when she was homeschooling her youngest son Patrick, she developed a desire to begin a second career in education. When she visited Georgian Court University to explore the idea of becoming an ESL teacher, the admissions career counselor encouraged her to meet the head of the counseling department. “Sometimes someone sees something in you that you don’t see in yourself,” Mulroy shared. “God used that meeting to redirect my path.” A few years later she graduated with her M.A. in Education for School Counseling.
While completing her master’s degree, she worked with underprivileged children and various immigrant populations. She was convinced that this was the path that the Lord had for her until a friend sent her information about an opening at TCS for the school counselor position. She was intrigued by the application. Mulroy explains, “It was not your typical job application. It asked questions about my faith which really made me sit and ponder a lot of different things. What finally pushed me to apply though, was a business card which I got from a colleague at the school. As I looked at the card, I was moved by the phrase, ‘Educating for Eternity’; this made me feel that the Lord was directing me here to TCS.”
Integrating faith in the School Counseling Role
Prior to meeting with each student, Mrs. Mulroy sends them a survey in order to learn a little about them before talking with them. The survey has questions about their academics and other achievements, but also pertaining to their faith. When she meets with the students individually, she begins with prayer and poses questions throughout their conversation that point them back to their faith and how God is involved in this process. “I will be praying for each student and with them,” says Mulroy. “I hope to help and guide them with their academic, social, emotional and spiritual concerns.”
Preparing students for a life beyond TCS
Mrs. Mulroy’s vision for the Timothy Christian School Guidance office is to provide services for all students and assist them in their academic, social, emotional, and spiritual development.
Mrs. Mulroy plans to meet with each HS student individually as well as with each grade level as a whole. She has already met with half of our seniors and is very impressed by the focus, drive and level of preparedness for college and career that students have shown. She encourages any student or parent with questions about the college application process to reach out to her. She is excited to introduce SCOIR, an assessment and college planning online tool, to our students and their families. She will also lead small groups on conflict resolution, study skills and more.
Working together with Miss McKay, Mrs. Mulroy is excited to be planning several upcoming events. These include:
- A Zoom meeting for our parents with Thrivent, a non-profit that offers financial services. Thrivent will be giving guidance regarding financial planning for college on Oct. 1st.
- Our sophomores and juniors will have the opportunity to take the PSAT on October 14th.
- The SAT will be given at TCS on Saturday, Oct. 3rd. This is the very first time TCS will serve as a testing site.
Reflecting on the year ahead, Mrs. Mulroy shared, “I am blessed to have the opportunity and privilege to serve alongside the committed staff and involved parents at TCS in mentoring our students in becoming passionate and committed Christ-followers and lifelong learners. I trust in the Lord’s abundant provision to lead and equip us as we shepherd each one to live out their faith boldly. Our students will step out confidently, prepared for all the good works the Lord has planned for their future.”
