The highlight event of the year for the Greater Middlesex Conference (GMC) athletic directors is the annual GMC Scholar-Athlete Banquet. Held at the Edison Pines Manor, the banquet recognizes the brightest academic performers amongst the athletes of the 34 member high schools. TCS was brightly reflected by this year’s representatives, Katie Hanlon & Joe Zgorzynski.
Katie Hanlon has been a pillar in the TCS athletic department, playing 11 out of a possible 12 seasons in her 4 years in the high school. She has been awarded multiple team awards, received all-division recognition in soccer and softball, as well as being part of a divisional championship soccer team her junior year. Katie is known for her tireless work ethic in the athletic department and in the classroom. Her academic efforts have resulted in a 4.06 gpa, 96.5 numeric average, and ranking of 6th in her class. In typical Katie-fashion, she has gone above and beyond to be take on the responsibilities of being the president of TCS’ National Honor Society, and assist with the Jr Tiger elementary basketball program. Katie will be attending the University of Pittsburgh in the fall; she will major in athletic training and pre-physical therapy.
Joe Zgorzynski (Scorsinski) has made the 4 year transformation from quietly involved freshmen to senior captain leader. Joe “Z” has played played soccer and baseball at TCS for the entirety of his high school career, and has spent each winter serving the TCS basketball program as its game manager. Joe has been the captain of the soccer and baseball teams his senior year and was on the divisional champion baseball team his junior year. Joe has also lent his talents as a drummer to the TCS praise band that performs each Wednesday throughout the school year. Joe’s academic performance stands on its own as he is ranked 10th in his class, holds a 3.88 gpa, and a 95.2 numeric average. Joe has also taken on the responsibilities of being a member of TCS’ national honor society. Joe will attend Geneva College in the fall and he will major in engineering.
Thanks to outstanding young people, TCS’ reputation continues to be ‘salt & light’ in the interscholastic athletic community.
