NEW FACULTY HIGHLIGHT: TCS WELCOMES MR. JAMES CARR!

We are delighted to welcome Mr. James Carr to the TCS faculty!

Having worked closely as a robotics coach with Mrs. Gall and Dr. Fong over the years, Mr. Carr is a perfect fit and hit the ground running as our new computer science and robotics teacher this year.

His education and previous experience make him very well qualified to teach our 6th through 12 graders.

Mr. Carr holds a BS EE, BS CS, and an MBA. He spent 20 years as a design engineer in the computer security and communications arena, eight years working for a hedge fund, three years running a large non-profit robotics organization, one year at the US Patent and Trademark Office as a patent examiner evaluating crypto-currency patent applications, three years as an entrepreneur working with start-up companies, and 15 years as a robotics team coach (advancing to the World Championship with 12 different teams).

Mr. Carr is excited to be teaching the MS students programming languages such as JAVA and Html which help them in web development, animation as well as robotics. The HS students as a part of their AP courses also learn additional languages such as Python and Scratch which further help them in understanding machine learning and the world of Artificial intelligence. He is most excited about introducing 3D Printing technology using CAD (computer aided design) to the students this year! This will expose them to new technological advancements and their applications.

What/Who inspired you to take up teaching?

I worked with the previous two teachers at Timothy and I loved coaching/teaching robotics for the last 15 years, so when I heard from Dr. Fong (one of my former robotics students) that she was leaving TCS, I prayed about it and decided to apply.

Why did you choose to teach at TCS?

All four of my kids attended TCS and I had very good memories of it and how it positively impacted their lives.

How are you integrating faith and learning as you teach at TCS?

There are a number of moral questions in life and unfortunately, computers personalize victims.   I want to teach the kids about what type of thing is right and wrong with respect to cyber security and hacking as well as how to create games and web pages that reflect Christian values.

In what ways do you want to prepare students for life beyond TCS?

There are a lot of jobs in the computer industry and a lot of colleges that love to get FIRST robotics team members into their engineering schools and offer many scholarships.   I would also like to get kids working as interns in the technology industry.   Computers impact every facet of our lives, even if a kid is not interested in a career in engineering, they will be impacted by computers and understanding how they are programmed, how the internet web pages work, how databases collect and store data – all will help them be more informed about life in today’s computer age.

How has your experience at TCS been thus far?

The teachers are very supportive of each other and have made me feel very welcome. It is gratifying as a parent to listen to the staff meetings where the focus is on how to help our struggling kids.  Also, the inclusion of prayer and God into our daily work lives has been a blessing.
