Veritas Numquam Perit
Truth Never Perishes
The above motto of the TCS Debate Team exemplifies its mission and purpose: to equip our students to discern and defend truth at the highest level. The TCS Debate Team has competed against the top schools in NJ and nationally since the 2005/2006 sesaon. The activity provides an opportunity for intellectually-motivated students to develop crucial skill sets: to research, synthesize, and publically argue their points using logic and persuasive techniques. This type of debate, known as the Lincoln-Douglas forum, is a highly competitive debate which pits a Timothy student against some of the top students from the East Coast. Many students utilize their debate experience to bolster their college applications and enhance the abilities they will need to compete and prevail in the university classroom and beyond. In addition, the debate team provides a community for highly motivated young men and women to thrive. Participants are trained and mentored by older peers and seasoned alumni. The team dynamic revolves around the crucial Christian principle of serving one other. A “good” debater is not necessarily the person who achieves personal glory; rather, it is the person who understands that the key to excellence is learning how to assist and support their teammates. The team strives to create a family-like atmosphere which offers each young person a “home” away from home. The goal of the team is to fulfill the biblical mandate of “renewing the mind” and “being ready to answer anyone who asks about the hope that is in you”. The debate tournament season begins at Yale University in early September and concludes with the state championship in March. Last year’s graduating debaters are currently attending Rutgers, University of Pennsylvania, Rice, Grove City, Vanderbilt, and Cornell.
