The characteristic that most distinguishes a Timothy Christian School education from education elsewhere is the conscious effort we make in the spiritual growth of our students. Our highest goal is to see each student enter into a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and continue to walk with Him day by day. In the high school tremendous emphasis is placed on what it looks like to live everyday as a Christian teenager in a world that is far from Christian. Students are challenged in the practical application of their faith in the choices they make, in the attitudes they possess, and in what they choose to go along with that would be contrary to God’s Word. Students are confronted with how their actions reflect upon who they claim to be as Christians. Living for Jesus Christ is not something that can be turned off and on depending on whether a student is at school in front of teachers or at home hanging out with friends.
Besides being academic instructors, high school teachers are spiritual mentors for their students. This is a role we take very seriously. Teachers take time to counsel with, listen to, and pray with their students in both formal and informal settings. Discipline at every level is carried out with an eye for the discipleship of students in their Christian walks.
Some of the more formal opportunities for spiritual growth include:
Chapel program
Weekly chapels are held for the high school. A particular theme is chosen and developed throughout the year. The format is widely varied including participation from pastors and youth pastors of local churches, other outside Christian speakers, teachers, alumni and current students. Chapels devoted to prayer, testimonies and music also occur.
Discipleship Groups
Single gender groups of 10-12 students meet with a staff member twice a month for discipleship in the areas of personal spiritual growth. Topics from God’s Word, relevant to living out the Christian faith in today’s world are openly discussed. Leadership skills are developed as groups are challenged to meet the needs of others by planning and carrying out activities to minister to those around them.
Spiritual Life Conference
Two day fall and winter conferences are built into the high school schedule. This gives us time to come away from our normal routine and concentrate more extensively on things of the Lord together. Outside speakers challenge us from God’s Word while our own Praise Team leads us in worshipping through song.
Praise Team
Timothy high school students lead us in worship through music in our chapel program. The praise team also ministers at student conferences and other events throughout the year.
Student
Led Bible Studies – Different Bible studies led by upperclassmen occur during lunch time for any high school student to attend. Bonds and friendships form as students hold each other accountable to reading God’s Word and living godly Christian lives.
Other Ministries
The Christian life is characterized by service. Throughout the year there are numerous opportunities that arise for student involvement. Nursing home and a soup kitchen outreaches are scheduled into the high school student’s high school career. Other activities are carried out as students express interest. Some of these include evangelism outreaches, mission trips, shoebox Christmas gifts, Compassion child support, prayer groups, drama presentations, free tutoring and many others.
