There is a sequential and purposeful development of the Elementary curriculum with weekly staff meetings to fully appreciate the physical, mental, and social development of the students. Essential in all of this is the integration of the Word of God into each area.
Reading
Foundation and Framework is the basis of the reading program through the 6th grade. This is a uniquely designed and researched supported instructional program that focuses on student achievement in vocabulary, reading comprehension, total reading, critical thinking, problem solving, and written expression. Students work in groups and individually to visually express their comprehension of the different patterns of thought in the written material. TCS devotes 90 minutes each day to reading because of its fundamental importance in the education of the child.
Math
Since 2008, Timothy Christian School has been gradually transitioning from Saxon Math to Math in Focus (Singpore Math). Students develop basic math computation and problem solving skills through a series of concrete-to-pictorial-to-abstract thinking patterns. This new program develops our students into the algebraic thinkers necessary for achievement in upper level math programs. We are already ready seeing significant gains in our students’ math abilities.
Language Arts
Additional time is devoted each day for phonics, grammar, spelling, writing and vocabulary. The lower grades use a comprehensive phonetic and grammar program to develop the essential skills necessary for success in the language arts. TCS uses Shurley Grammar in the upper elementary grades to continue the basics of achievement in language arts.
Bible
Each day, teachers devote significant time for the study of the Bible. Once again, TCS is in a state of transition. We are currently using Bob Jones publication but we are also gradually writing our own curriculum: using the concepts of Foundation and Framework to integrate common Biblical patterns into the students’ understanding of the Word of God.
Science/Social Studies
Each of these disciplines is taught for half of the year with an intention to teach these from a Biblical perspective. These subjects are taught in an interactive manner with projects and activities. All of this prepares the students to be fully prepared for the middle school experience.
